AUGUST 30, 2006 - NEW PHOTO SECTION ADDED . . .
|
Just added and to be updated for an indefinite time is the new "Reunion Photo Section". New photo galleries will be added as I receive them, and have time to layout their web viewing pages. Each gallery will be named by the individual submitting the images. Please email the digital reunion photos you would like to share with your classmates, all are welcomed.
Simply send an email with your images (digital photos) attached to the email - its that simple, each email can not exceed 10 mb or the mail server will bounce the email into the great back hole of no return. If you have a caption for the photos, describe the photo number with your indented caption in the email text area. Send the email to:
All the best, Dick Washichek

AUGUST 28, 2006 - REUNION - ITS A WRAP . . .
|
You have done yourselves proud. Our little reunion, by all accounts, was a terrific success.
One of the teachers told me it was the finest reunion she has ever attended. She said the warmth of the classmates was at the highest level, and the interaction between the classmates themselves, as well as the teachers, was exceptional. I'm not the least surprised at this you understand, we are in fact adults. But oh, the inner fears do come out, and old insecurities do indeed surface and yet, this weekend, all of that disappeared and what fun it was to comfortably chat with old friends & make some new ones.
Jane received the following email from Craig Merkel, in which Craig does a good job of capturing the moment:
"Hi, Vicki and I came home from the picnic and crashed being totally exhausted from all the conversation and faces so I can't imagine what it must have been for you. It was an absolutely wonderful event and when I finally did make it to my bed at around 4 am I couldn't go back to sleep thinking of it all, so here I am at the computer. Jane you are correct: it is finally a level playing field. The high school cliques are gone and we're all just friends who share common experiences from school. I was rather unsure about coming to this event but now am very glad that I did. It exceeded my every expectation and I can't wait for the next one in 10 years. Besides my classmates the thing that made it so special was seeing the teachers. I had been hoping for years to tell Jane Middlehurst how much she had influenced me and I got the chance Saturday to hug her and tell her just that. It was very emotional. Thanks again - Craig Merkel ".
Some Highlights:
When Jon Jaqua opened his place to us for this reunion, I had no idea it would lend us such an air of comfort. Many thanks from all of us Jon!
Mel Krause was giving us a talk, telling us how young we were and how much we should look forward to giving back. Then, one of our classmates tried to tease him and heckled him a little bit. Mel stopped right there and threatened to paddle the guy - just like he did in school! After all the laughter died down, Mel gracefully finished his talk.
Lez Newhouse (Moore) was the star of the tennis tournament although Roger Diddock played really really well, (for an old guy) . . . A great time was had by everyone.
Bill Boldt's golf tournament was simply fantastic. He had a set of special rules you will not find on the PGA circuit . . . . FIVE mulligan's? . . . . most fun.
When John Wolf was profusely thanked by Jim Richardson for doing such a great job organizing the event, our class rose in unison and gave John a standing ovation.
You are a pretty classy group of classmates, good job.
Congratulations one and all,
Bill
Memory Book Errors and Omissions report! (there are probably a lot more...)
The database of classmate information at the back of the book is not near as accurate as the addresses and phones numbers listed under the classmates pictures.
Marian Kingsley (Smith) was not listed as being on the reunion committee. Not only was she on the committee, her input was most valuable. Thank you Marian.
Warm wishes,
Bill & Jane

AUGUST 10, 2006 - TWO ADDITIONAL TEACHERS FOUND . . .
|
Two more teachers have been contacted and want to attend the festivities. They are: Richard Ahrends and Mike Shirk. This brings the total for the teachers to 33! I have spoken with several of our classmates who are not yet signed up, but who have assured me they are coming and will sign up. I hope they will as an event like this doesn't happen very often.

AUGUST 9, 2006 - 17 DAYS AND COUNTING . . .
|
Our party date is less than three weeks away, I can hardly wait!!
Our picnic count is up to 148 at this time, with over twenty teachers committed to coming. The turnout is just what John Wolf, our reunion chair, was hoping for. Obviously not everyone can attend, but with John's contact work, almost everyone knows that it is coming up, and for those who have schedule conflicts, they know we care about them and will miss them. Several have emailed me and asked me to say hi to everyone. We have a truly warm class...
Even though Jane and I are steaming across this big pond called the Adriatic Sea, on a cruise through the Mediterranean, we are talking about the reunion. As we sat cuddled in a gondola, being serenaded through the canals of Venice, we chatted happily about folks we will get to see at this reunion. I thought it would be romantic to dance with my sweetheart as we walked through the heart of Venice, which is the plaza near St. Mark's basilica. The sidewalk orchestra stuck up a Viennese Waltz and as I took Jane in my arms I told my feet, "Waltz, feet"......, I'm blushing as I tell you, my mind said waltz; however, my feet moved straight into a polka. And there I am, doing a romantic polka to Viennese music in the heart of Venic ... humm. You know what they say in the dance world, when you get tangled up, just tango on, and we did. What fun. And now we raise our wine glasses to toast you, classmates of 1966.
Our website is growing, with the latest information - lucky for us we have Dick Washichek, he built and maintains the site.

Warm fuzzes everyone,

JULY 31, 2006 - JOHN WOLF FINDS FIVE MORE TEACHERS . . .
|
John Wolf finds more teachers - and informs us Ron Burge called to report that he will be bringing Dr. Wayne Flynn to the school open house and the picnic. In addition to Dr. Wayne Flynn, John has located four other teachers. One, that several people have asked about, is Jane Middlehurst who is now Jane Glazer. He reported that she sounded very excited about coming to the school and the picnic. He has also been in contact with Clayton Fraser, Dick Jensen and Bill Youngmayr. With the addition of these five we can now expect 31 teachers attending our 40th year class reunion.
John also learned one of the teachers has a grandson attending Sheldon and that the football team is having an intra-squad scrimmage on the morning of Saturday the 26th at the high school. This might make a nice pre-reunion event, to check this years football talent

JULY 28, 2006 - TWO MORE TEACHERS FOUND . . .
|
I have located two more teachers both of whom say they are thrilled to be asked to attend the reunion. They are Shirley Richards, who was Shirley Dick back in 66 and Pat Gibson who is now Pat Romanov. I also have a phone number for Jane Middlehurst and its only a matter of time before I speak with her.

|
JULY 28, 2006 - 136 CLASSMATES AND SPOUSES . . .
|
Our picnic has 136 classmates and spouses signed up, plus twenty four teachers. With only four weeks to go, we are set to have a great gathering of enlightened, graceful, warm, and loving . . . fifty-eight year olds . . . Humm, my kids might say jumping into a bird bath would be more fun - but heck, what do they know . . zip!
Lez is so excited about her tennis tournament, she's fromping to get it going. Bill Boldt has a group of golfers ready to play on Saturday morning, raring-to-go as only golfers know how . . .
All in all, John Wolf knows for a fact that we will have two hundred classmates and friends show up to get reacquainted at this picnic of the decade. Nice job John, you really know how to throw a party!
Last decade we had 130 names listed in our classmate directory. This go around we have a memory book which features 130 current biographies and/or current photos, as well as contact information for three hundred and seventy classmates. Goodness sakes, the fruits of John's diligent tracking have certainly born fruit.
What is interesting is the number of classmates requesting bio's and contact information for their long ago friends. That, of course, is the fun of getting together every decade.
I only received one comment about the classmate that was using Viagra. Something about keeping a "stiff" upper lip . . . humm.
Our Sheldon Reunion Web Site, webmastered by Dick Washichek, just keeps getting better. He says it started out as a simple three page static idea, but has grown into something between a part time and full time job, and he's happy if you're happy. Go ahead, here is his email address, tell him what you think.

|
I have extended the memory book deadline until Sunday, August 13th. So, my dear late ones, you are not off the hook yet. If you have not sent yours in, sooner is better. As in, today is a good day to write it up and send it in. Evil pushy person that I am . . . your memory page is empty and needs filling.
Warm fuzzes everyone, see you in four weeks.

JULY 28, 2006 - NEW QUIZ PAGE ADDED . . .
|
A new "Quiz Page" has been added and will be updated as Bill Spiller has time to scan the bio's submitted by you and develops interesting facts from them. The list of current quiz's have been published previously in the last several Reunion Update emails that he has sent out this month. Never fear new ones will be coming

JULY 21, 2006 - 118 CLASSMATES AND COUNTING . . .
|
Time keeps on marching with barely five weeks to go before the biggest 1966 Sheldon Reunion party of the decade....... okay, okay, it's our only reunion of the decade, who's counting.... With 118 classmates signed up, Chairman John Wolf predicts a turnout of over 200 classmates plus teachers! What fun. A mere decade ago we held our reunion and only 130 classmates were found - out of 400 in our class. This go around, John has sleuthed high and low and found all of us but 30 - wow. Everyone who was found has been genuinely pleased to be remembered and included - John was a riot to watch as he became more and more excited the more people he found, his enthusiasm was infectious. Except for one guy, astonished to be found, asked John to forget where he was... hiding from who one wonders....

JULY 21, 2006 - MEMORY BOOK NOTES . . .
|
I have received bio's and pictures from 135 classmates who took the time out of their daily lives and wrote about their last forty years. The results are overwhelming. It's like catching up on what's happening with old friends - one after the other. Thanks folks.
The cost of producing a black and white book at Office Depot was just under $15.00. However, the cost of producing a color book at Office Depot was quoted at a whopping $110 each! I volunteered to produce the book for $45.00, thinking Office Depot was turning too large a profit. Therefore, all mistakes, errors and omissions land on me, with apologies in advance.

JULY 21, 2006 - WEBSITE IS TRACKING . . .
|
The web site is tracking signups for the picnic. So check it out and if you find someone missing from the list that you would like to see, get a hold of them and shake their tree a little bit. Please click on the "Classmates" navigation button.

JULY 17, 2006 - COMMITTEE MEETING HELD . . .
|
We had a good meeting yesterday. We ironed out a lot of details and have things pretty well planned. There is still a lot to do but we are good shape. My goal is to get at least 200 people signed up for the reunion. I think we are on track to do that.

|
JULY 15, 2006 - DIRTY DIDDOCK LAYS DOWN THE GAUNTLET . . .
|
The gauntlet has been thrown down! A challenge was received today by a very old person, well, certainly older than any of us. Our very own and much renowned, Roger Diddock, former teacher, says he can play tennis with any of us. He says to please tell Lez he will enter the tennis competition and he is "quick". I know for a fact that Lez plays a pretty mean game, and Jim Richardson is more fit now than he was as a starting guard for our basketball team. I say that Roger is in deep trouble on this one.
By the way, he signed his note - Dirty Diddock, you know, I like this guy all over again....

|
JULY 15, 2006 - SUPER SLEUTHING . . .
|
Again, John Wolf has put on his super sleuthing hat and has tracked down twenty or so teachers who were thrilled to be contacted and down right excited to be invited to our reunion picnic.

|
JULY 12, 2006 - TEACHERS ATTENDING . . .
|
We have been busy contacting many of our teachers. It looks like at least 20 teachers will be attending the picnic. Teachers who have said they are coming include:
Mel Krause, Roger Diddock, Janice Disch Keuter, Dick Arbuckle, Boyd Morgan, Mildred Beat, Frau Stevenson, Dan Browning, Harold Beaudet, Wayte Kirchner, Ann Lapstad, Carolyn Rayborn, Price Roop, Geary Triplett, Marna Schulz, Pat Gisborne.
There are several teachers who I am sure I or some of the other teachers will find such as Jane Middlehurst, Jerry Keuter, John Clyde, and several others.
If you have a favorite teacher or just a teacher you would like to see after all these years let me know and I will give it some extra effort.
John Wolf
|
JULY 12, 2006 - SEE WHO IS ATTENDING THE REUNION PICNIC . . .
|
Visit the "Classmates Page" and see who's registered to attend the reunion picnic, golf and more. If a classmates name as a "P"= Picnic, "G"= Golf, and soon "T"=Tennis. Don't miss out.

JULY 6, 2006 - COMMITTEE MEETING 7/16/2006 . . .

We need to have another meeting to make sure everything is on track and to assign tasks. That meeting will be Sunday, July 16, 2006 at 7:00 pm at my house. I hope to see you then.

|
JULY 6, 2006 - FOOD AND FACILITIES . . .
|
Sandy Grosbach Epplet and I met with Jon Jaqua and the caterer at Jon's farm on Wednesday. The menu includes tri-tip steak, salad, corn on the cob, baked beans, beer, wine, soft drinks, dessert and more. Jon's place is very nice, has plenty of room and is a great place for a reunion. There is room for softball, tennis and even swimming.

|
JULY 6, 2006 - SIGN UP NOW . . .
|
The sign ups are going well but we need people to sign up as soon as possible and to get their bios in so Bill and Jane won't have to do everything at the last minute. Also, it is ok for people who were not in the class to come, if they sign up and pay. If you know someone who wants to join they may contact me or Bill Spiller.
|
JULY 6, 2006 - COME TO THE PICNIC . . .
|
IF YOU DO NOT PRE-REGISTER your more then welcome to come to the picnic and pay at the door, so-to-speak (table at dusty-path entrance is more like it). However, John Wolf tells me that the caterer needs a hard count a week before the picnic. So please let us know if you are coming at least a week prior to the picnic.
Diana Deverell is coming all the way from Denmark. She says she can't play tennis, and can't play golf, but she can lift a beer with the best of you. It just wouldn't seem right to run out of beer at the picnic because the count is wrong......

JULY 6, 2006 - TEACHERS FREE - HELP FIND MORE TEACHERS . . .

Teachers are free. I believe Mel Krause and Wes Lathen are both coming. We are trying to locate as many teachers as possible. If you know of the whereabouts of one of our teachers let us know.

JULY 6, 2006 - MEMORY BOOK - UPDATE . . .
|
Your response to the memory book has been terrific. One bio I received was two pages long, it's a good thing I can change fonts. You might need a magnifying glass to read it but it does fit on one page. Nadine Peterson has the shortest bio to date. She says, "... Been on a journey of self-realization and living with an open heart."Too cool.
July 16, 2006 is the cut-off date - so submit your bio's now!

JUNE 20, 2006 - FIRST SIGN UPS . . .
|
Molly Westling (Brann), Dan Ester, and Tom Carter were the first to signup for this summers picnic. As a reward it seems only fitting they sing the Sheldon fight song to us at the picnic. . . .Or maybe not. . . .
This is really going to be fun. Julie Keith (Nichols) and her husband are making name tags with our year book pictures on them. . . . thank goodness.
I met Lynn Chase at the planning meeting last February and had to sheepishly ask him his name. How embarrassing, but what the heck, at this age I'm old enough to ask.
Looking forward to seeing you in August,

MAY 16, 2006 - MESSAGE BOARD
|
Over the last two weeks this reunion web site has been extensively expanded. You will note that we have now included a list of classmates found and contacted with reunion information, a list of missing classmates that have no contact information, and a list a classmates that are no longer with us. In addition to the lists the Events and Lodging pages have been added to better aid classmates planning to attend the reunion. Lastly a message board has been setup, enabling classmates the ability to post and/or answer any posted questions. We hope you find these additions helpful.

APRIL 23, 2006 - REUNION
|
Organization for the reunion events got underway at John Wolf's house. Eleven of the bunch got together for planning as well as getting a head start on socializing. In addition to the "official" events, we'll also try to add in some no-host events on Saturday after the picnic and maybe Sunday Brunch at the Valley River Inn.
The Saturday picnic will be on the beautiful grounds of Jon Jaqua's farm on McKenzie View Drive. Several of our group seem to recall this is the area where Howie Perrin make his infamous "bridge to canoe" leap into Detterman's boat - obviously one of the more colorful events that make up the Sheldon legend.
Think good thoughts for a sunny August and please get those 40-year bios and pictures.
